DEM SIMULATIONS OF THE DIRECT SHEAR TEST


Abstract eng:
DEM simulations of the direct shear test have been performed under both constant normal stress and constant volume conditions. Results are presented to show how the state of stress in the shear band evolves. Comparisons with boundary force calculations are made and implications for laboratory measurements are discussed. At the critical state, the results are also interpreted in terms of Mohr’s circles of stress and strain rate.
