This paper presents a simple fiber optics based technique for the detection of delamination location and size. The integrated strain along a fiber that is embedded or surface-attached to the composite is measured as a function of load position. By comparing the integrated strain vs load position curve, or its second derivative, for undamaged and delaminated members, the delamination location and size can be determined. In this paper, both theoretical and experimental results will be presented to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed technique to detect delaminations that may close under the applied load. Finite element analysis incorporating contact between the delaminated surfaces is performed to identify the trend of strain perturbation for delaminated members under different support conditions. Experiments are then carried out for composite specimens with different delamination locations and sizes. The results show that relatively small delaminations can be detected with this technique
