In particular, the corner and the area near the corner of an L-shaped core wall are subjected to high compressive stress, so it is considered to be effective to reinforce these areas for improving the deformation capacity of core walls. In this study, central compression tests and eccentric compression tests were conducted on square and rectangular section columns which simulated the corner and the area near the corner of the L-shaped core walls. The results of these compression tests were analyzed using the three-dimensional nonlinear finite element method (FEM), and the deformation capacity of core walls was examined. The tests and analyses showed that increasing the confining area of concrete, the amount of confining steel and so on were shown to be effective for improving the deformation capacity of core walls.
