The purpose of the project is to investigate the feasibility of designing vertical evacuation structures in order to provide refuge from tsunami inundation in communities where there is not enough time to evacuate horizontally out of the inundation zone. This paper summarizes the resulting FEMA P646 Report, Guidelines for Design of Structures for Vertical Evacuation from Tsunamis, which provides recommendations on siting concepts, design concepts, performance objectives, design loads, and load combinations that should be considered in locating and designing tsunami vertical evacuation structures.
