Furthermore, elastic-plastic 3-D finite element analyses, in which the pile and the soil were assumed to have the plastic characteristics and the contact boundary condition was considered between the pile and the soil, were performed to obtain better understanding of the tests results. In this paper, the applicability of 3-D finite element analyses is presented by comparing the calculated analysis results with the observed test results, and then the influence of the nonlinear behavior of the pile-soil structure on the amplitude dependency of the effect of pile groups is discussed by parametric study with 3-D finite element analyses. It is shown that the analyses can simulate the lateral resistance behavior of pile groups by taking the material nonlinearity of the pile and the soil into account.
