The method is based on a new definition of the strong motion duration, combining the well known bracketed and significant duration definitions. The proposed duration presents high correlation with the duration of intense energy release. Two normalized parameters are introduced permitting a good approximation of the input energy by taking into account an effective value of the ground velocity and an equivalent number of excitation cycles depending on the frequency content of the ground velocity time history. The proposed parameters present a large correlation coefficient and the resulting error is minimal in comparison with existing methods that estimate the earthquake input energy.
