Compared to the original AEM, the advantages of VAEM are: the VAEM domain boundary can fit any type of domain easily, pre-existing joint rather than horizontal and vertical joints can be modeled, element size can be changed and displacement solution is not depended on the element size and etc. The verification of the model from elastic to non-linear range is shown in the paper. The proposed model shows good compatibility with theoretical and experimental results.
