Analysis of the transition between tubular modular track and ballasted track

Abstract eng:
A dynamic Two-Dimensional (2D) model is created of a transition between ballasted track and Tubular Modular Track (TMT) to investigate the impact of the transition on the Reinforced Concrete (RC) beam of the TMT structure. Reference rail displacement measurements, performed for this study, are used to calibrate the model. Sixteen ballast-TMT transition models with varying train speeds and rail slopes are created with the Finite Element Method (FEM) using the commercial analysis software package ABAQUS. These models are loaded with moving loads simulating the dynamic action of four train wheels passing over the rail. Results show that the RC beam displacements, bending moments and shear forces are sensitive to an increase in rail slopes and trainspeeds. It is concluded that regular track maintenance is required at a transition zone and that the design and maintenance of a transition zone should focus on achieving and maintaining gradual elevation change between supporting structures.
