Assessment of intelligence quotient of smart structures

Abstract eng:
Smart Structure Engineering (SSE) comes from the traditional civil engineering, which combined with smart materials, information technology and automatic control. Smart Structure (SS) is a kind of bionic structure system, which have the life features and intelligent function of self diagnosis, self—adaptive, self—control and self—repairing. SS can self-protect when the danger (earthquake, strong wind, vehicle overload) occurs. Smart structure has the ability of producing dynamic response, which is sustainable and repeatable to environmental changes. Besides, a stable state in the process of response can be maintained. This stability depends on the system’s information accumulation, recognition and feedback. Therefore, in the process of evaluation of the smart property of structure, not only, it is necessary to get the environmental variable’s numbers, strength and speed the material can be detected and perceived, but also, it is required to take into account the dynamic response capability controlled by the system itself. This is called Intelligence Quotient(IQ) of the structure. In this paper, SS can be characterized by the ability of learning, monitor ability, control ability, respond ability and self-healing capabilities to evaluate IQ of smart structure. And the conclusion can be drawn that the safety of the structure arises with the increase of IQ of the structure. It is suggested that IQ of smart structure should be put forward in design and operation process. Thus, applicability and survivability of the structure can be improved.
