Structural dynamic assessment of a footbridge under human-induced loadings

Abstract eng:
The objective of this investigation is to perform a structural dynamic assessment of an existing pedestrian footbridge, spanning 24.4m, located in the campus of the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The experimental modal testing was performed by dynamic monitoring through accelerometers installed on the structure as well as by a vibrometer device based on Laser Doppler Vibrometry using the SIMO and SISO acquisition techniques. These experimental results were calibrated with a developed three-dimensional numerical model that adopted the usual mesh refinement techniques present in finite element method simulations, based on the use of ANSYS program. Afterwards, a forced vibration analysis was performed on the structure. The structural system dynamic response in terms of peak accelerations values were evaluated and compared to the limiting values proposed by several authors and design standards aiming to assess the vibration serviceability of the analysed pedestrian footbridge.
