000012582 520__ $$2eng$$aIn the paper the dynamic analysis of a modern tied-arched footbridge over a road with heavy traffic was carried out. Firstly, natural frequencies and modes of vibration of the structure were evaluated. Then, vibrational comfort criteria under pedestrian loading were assessed. Finally, the dynamic response of the footbridge to traffic-induced vibrations, transmitted on the structure via the ground from the truck passage, was compared to the responses obtained for human movements. The results of the modal analysis revealed that the natural frequencies of the structure are relatively low. They coincided with the frequency of pedestrian steps (walking fast or running). The vertical comfort criteria were not exceeded for a single pedestrian walking fast or running. Since the footbridge serves for standard use, it rarely may be crossed by large groups of people. Hence, the level of vibrational comfort of the footbridge can be assessed as very high. It occurred that the dynamic response of footbridge to traffic-induced vibrations (in terms of vertical accelerations of the deck), which resulted from truck passage, was located between the response to a single pedestrian walking fast and running. However, the obtained level of maximum vibrations resulted from the passage of a single truck only. The level of vibration induced by heavy traffic may occur considerably higher.
