Nonlinear road-vehicle systems under filtered and periodic noise excitations

Abstract eng:
When vehicles are driving on roads, they are excited to vertical vibrations and velocity fluctuations effected by the random up and down of road surfaces when a strong coupling of across and along car dynamics are introduced. For critical velocities with resonant car vibrations, the one-modal velocity density bifurcates into a bimodal distribution with two peaks; i.e. the car velocity is fluctuating around two mean values with permanent jumps between both. In rotor dynamics, this jump phenomenon is identified as Sommerfeld effect and known from unbalanced, visco-elastically supported rotors. The paper shows that both problems are described by the same equations of motion, and derives new resonance amplifications when the angular velocity of the rotor is perturbed by white noise.
