Effects of reinforced concrete mansard roofs on the seismic behavior of plan-symmetric reinforced concrete buildings

Abstract eng:
Using mansard roof instead of flat roof in Turkey, provides maximum use of the interior space of the attic and additional financial gain to the contractor and owner. However, structural analysis and design of mansard roof elements are carried out without considering entire structural system. In this manner, effect of mansard roof on the seismic behavior of a building is not taken into account in any way. In this study, adjacent and detached type 3-dimensional building models with three bays and three and four story are investigated by linear time-history analysis, modal analysis and response spectrum analysis. Different R.C. mansard models have been diversified by changing the height and distance from the building exterior surface of the inclined mansard columns. Base shear forces, maximum roof displacements and modal periods were calculated and compared. Optimum design parameters with different types of mansard roofs have been proposed using 142 created models.
