A seven story frame office building with a symmetric square plan was considered for this purpose. The perimeter Moment Resisting Frames (MRFs) are eccentrically braced in the middle bays, being dual frames, whilst the internal frames are MRFs. The building is located in Bucharest and was designed based on Romanian seismic design code (P100-1 2013) and EN 1993-1-1 (2005), considering the dissipative behavior. The perimeter dual frames were modeled in two cases: as a part of the 3D building and as 2D structures. The structures were subjected to a set of seven semi-artificial accelerograms of Vrancea 1977 type. The average peak response of the dual frames modeled as 2D structure is compared with the more realistic response of the same frames being part of the 3D building. The comparisons are made in terms of inter-story drifts, links rotations and absolute story accelerations. The results of this research highlight that modeling the dual frames as 2D frames significantly overrate the seismic response and lead to very conservative design.
