Investigation on improvement of seismic performance of the mid-rise buildings with geosynthetics

Abstract eng:
The aim of this paper is to determine the effectiveness of Geotechnical Seismic Isolation (GSI) system on seismic performance of mid-rise buildings by shake table experiments. Firstly, a scaled 1/10 building model was designed and constructed. Secondly, a shake table experimental set-up was prepared. Later, special geosynthetics were chosen to be able to use as an alternative foundation isolation material. Finally, in order to complete the base isolated building model, a couple of geomembrane and non-woven geotextile was placed under the foundation of the scaled model. For the isolated and the fixed base models, a series of shake table experiments under the El Centro earthquake motion was performed at Bogazici University. Comparison of the test results showed that it can be a good alternative for mitigating the earthquake hazards, especially for developing countries.
