Macroscopic characterization of porous unit cells within the framework of the theory of porous media

Abstract eng:
In general, porous media have a complex heterogeneous microstructure. Simulating such materials with a full resolution of the microstructure is almost impossible due to enormous computational costs. One possibility to handle this problem is a single scale approach within the incorporation of a homogenization via the Theory of Porous Media (TPM). An alternative is the use of a homogenization procedure within a multiscale approach. Assuming a scale separation between both scales, the micro- and macroscale, and applying a FE2-method allows the resolution of representative volume elements which are attached to each macroscopic point. The choice of the properties of the unit cell on the microscale is a crucial aspect of this method. A promising approach to benefit from both methods is to use the TPM within a multiscale analysis. Based on this concept the paper focuses on the study of saturated porous unit cells with different morphologies and orientations.
