To increase the load bearing capacity of grouted connections, weld seams as shear keys are installed at the opposing tubular surfaces. Regarding the fatigue design of the steel members, shear keys have to be considered as local notches and may become design relevant. As a drawback, no validated S/N curves for shear keys exist. Within a research scholarship at the Institute for Steel Construction, a test rig for static pull out tests of shear keys was developed. Different shear key shapes were investigated experimentally and local strains were measured. Test results allowed the validation of numerical models which were used for the calculation of notch stresses. Based on this, synthetic S/N curves for shear keys were derived. The investigations show that numerical models can be validated sufficiently with the test results. The fatigue resistance of shear keys depends on the shear key shape. Calculated synthetic S/N curves are slightly below a detail category 71 according to EN 1993-1-9.
