Fatigue strength of preloaded hot-dip galvanized bolt assemblies with very large diameters

Abstract eng:
Comprehensive fatigue tests on high-strength bolt assemblies with large diameter M36 and very large diameter M64 are presented. All tests are performed under a representative high mean stress level, corresponding to the nominal preload of the bolts. By use of comparative test series on black uncoated bolts as well as hot-dip galvanized bolts with different galvanizing temperatures, the influence of the zinc coating on the fatigue resistance of large-size bolts is evaluated. Moreover, the results enable a good assessment of the influences of an increased diameter on the bolt’s fatigue characteristics. For the first time, the experimental results allow the verification of normative S-N curves for very large bolt diameter M64. Finally, a method for analytical fatigue calculation based on the local notch strain approach is presented and discussed in comparison to the experimental results.
