Initially, a novel GBT formulation is derived, taking into account the (i) simultaneous presence of longitudinal and/or hoop stresses, and (ii) destabilising effects associated with the follower nature of external pressure, and numerically implemented by means of GBT-based beam finite elements. Then, using a “joint element” concept and adopting constraint conditions to simulate the displacement compatibility at joints connecting two orthogonal CHS members, the above formulation is extended to cover simple frames. Numerical results concerning the buckling behaviour of columns, tubes, pressure vessels and L-shape frames are presented and discussed, in order to illustrate the application and potential of the proposed GBT-based approach. For validation purposes, most GBT results obtained are compared with values yielded by Ansys shell finite element analyses.
