Experimental studies on the shear strength of light-gauge beams with stiffened large web openings

Abstract eng:
The purpose of this study is to verify the effect of web opening to the beam shear strength. Full-scale testing and numerical simulation were conducted for this purpose. Simple opening and stiffened opening are selected for test parameters. From the testing and numerical simulation, following results were found; 1) Current formula which will evaluate the effect of simple opening was conservative. 2) Cold-formed stiffener at the opening edge will reinforce the opening and increase the shear strength of the beam. Finally, appropriate formulae that will evaluate the effect of simple opening and stiffened opening were proposed. The validity of the proposed formulae were also shown.
