Current procedures to stainless steel joints design are still largely based on analogies to carbon steel despite the fact that stainless steel has significantly different mechanical characteristics and structural performance. The present research work aimed to investigate the structural response of lap bolted joint made of two stainless steel grades: ferritic and duplex. A nonlinear numerical analyses carried out using the ABAQUS 6.14 presented a good agreement in terms of the maximum load and failure mode when compared to the preformed experiments. The results indicated a conservative level of safety from European code provisions in comparison to the experimental results.
