A study of the elastic lateral-torsional buckling behaviour of hot-rolled steel beams with flange upstands

Abstract eng:
The lateral-torsional buckling behaviour of hot-rolled steel beams has been studied extensively. Much of the research carried out has been limited to doubly symmetric beams and a few other common geometries. The study of monosymmetric and non-symmetric geometries has not been as extensive. This paper presents a preliminary parametric study of the elastic lateral-torsional buckling behaviour of monosymmetric I- and H-beams with upstands on the upper flange. This is an unusual configuration; the enclosure thus created at the top of the beam is primarily intended to hold services such as ducts, pipes and cables. The study is carried out using finite element modelling. The behaviour is investigated for various spans and with various heights of upstands. It is observed that the upstands increase the critical buckling moment of the section, but the rate of increase of the buckling moment progressively diminishes with continued increase in upstand height. In some cases, and contrary to expectation, the buckling moment actually starts to decrease beyond a certain height of upstand.
