Substitution of steel components by UHPC

Abstract eng:
This contribution presents the current state of the research project Substitution of steel by UHPC. Aim of the project is to develop components of UHPC, which have been made of steel so far. This includes a hollow box girder with a span up to 30 m as well as a UHPC composite column and a UHPC-steel-composite girder with a web of steel and flanges of UHPC. First, the development of a selfcompacting UHPC mixture with a compressive strength >180 MPa after 28 days without heat treatment was required. In combination with prestressing a very good load bearing capacity of the girders will be achieved. Model tests were performed in order to investigate the splitting behaviour in the transfer zone of the pre-stressing force. The test results to date indicate that by using high amounts of steel fibres conventional reinforcement can be avoided. Further, tests to determine the influence of spiral reinforcement on the confinement and load capacity of round UHPC columns have been carried out. The experimental test results demonstrate that the spiral reinforcement and the used steel fibre amount influence the load bearing capacity hardly. However, the ductile behaviour of the structure increases significantly by increasing spiral reinforcement and confinement.
