Shear performance of rectangular section RC beams strengthened with near-surface-mounted GFRP bars

Abstract eng:
The objective of this study is to investigate the shear performance of rectangular section RC beams with NSM GFRP bars. A total of 7 simply supported beams strengthened with NSM GFRP bars and one control beam were tested. Performance and the failure modes of the test beams were studied and discussed. The efficiency of the NSM shear strengthening was discussed in aspect of the main two parameters: angle of the NSM reinforcement with respect to the longitudinal axis of the beam and spacing between GFRP elements. The studies indicate that shear failure of the strengthened beams is accompanied by the secondary damage. Compared to the control beam, the shear strength of the strengthened beam is significantly enhanced when the diagonal crack appears, the epoxy adhesive cracks, the diagonal crack propagated and the beam failed. GFRP bars has contribute to restriction on crack propagations as well as the part of shear bearing capacity of the strengthened beam.
