Control of cracking caused by early-age deformation in edge-restrained concrete walls

Abstract eng:
This paper deals with the control of cracking caused by restraint to early-age cooling and shrinkage of concrete in a wall where contraction is restrained on one edge by a more massive footing or by an adjacent part of the structure. Rational design procedures are proposed for determining the degree of restraint, the width and spacing of the cracks and the amount of reinforcement required for the control of cracking. The design procedures are illustrated by a worked example.
