Effect of Acacia Karroo Gum on carbonation and chloride penetration in concrete

Durable concrete should resist potentially destructive conditions to which it can be exposed to during service. Two important tests used to measure durability of concrete are carbonation and chloride ingress. Carbonation and chloride penetration plays a significant role in loss of durability of concrete. An accelerated carbonation test using a controlled environment was carried out in order to assess the effect of Acacia Karroo Gum on carbonation of concrete. Plain concrete using different dosages of Gum Acacia Karroo with different water cement ratio was tested. For the carbonation test, half of the samples prepared were coated with epoxy paint on four surfaces and left in the laboratory to dry for 24 hours, while the other half were left without painting. The samples were then exposed to 10% carbon dioxide for three weeks. The samples were split into two equal halves parallel to the plane of the uncoated surface and sprayed with phenolphthalein. The uncoated samples were tested for compressive strength. At 0.7% dosage, the carbonation depth decreased by 20% from the control. Further reduction was observed with reduced water cement ratio. Chloride conductivity test were carried out according to The South African chloride conductivity test. Results showed slight improvement in chloride ingression.
