The strength of compacted backfill: Polymer composite

The use of synthetic polymer binders for strength enhancement in limited water environments is useful in infrastructure development in semi-arid and developing economies. The Unconfined Compression Strength (UCS) of a granular backfill was investigated. The materials were stabilized with different percentages of water borne polymer, compacted to optimum densities and cured for 3, 7 and 28 days. The result revealed that the maximum UCS was mobilized at 6% binder content and the UCS continued to increase beyond the 28 days curing period. The UCS is dependent on moulding water content and curing temperature. The blending of polymer with cement is beneficial for combined binder content greater than 6%.
