As the final accuracy of any composite assembly is determined by the geometric accuracy of its components, the mating surfaces of every individual assembly-part are measured by the coordinate measurement system. The obtained point cloud is then used to model geometry of the mating surfaces. In the proposed model, a linear rolling guideway is decomposed into: a set of balls of nonlinear stiffness, bolt joints and linearly elastic material. Effects of measured geometrical inaccuracies of the mating surfaces to which guideways are connected is analyzed in the paper. It further puts forward an efficient calculation method applying homogenous matrix transformation to determine the total deviation of the assembled machine tool, as established on the basis of the derived models. The question of optimal selective assembly of a machine set was thus stated and the genetic algorithm implementation served as a means of solving the problem depending on different optimization criteria. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm was verified through the determination of the optimal assembly method of a set of milling machines, as compared to a random algorithm.
