Simulations and verifications of selective induction heating of injection mold cavity insert

Abstract eng:
The injection molding of thin-walled parts is one of the most problematic procedures in plastics processing. Most commonly occurring defects of said parts are: short shots, diesel effect, welding lines, excessive internal stresses and warping. In order to eliminate the emphasized problems, a variotherm process is used by many producers. Then, high heating efficiency of the mold cavity surface becomes one of the ultimate goals. The present study deals with the issue of selective induction heating of injection mold cavity through application of external single-layered induction coil equipped with a magnetic field concentrator. The process of selective heating depends on the increase in temperature of only selected forming surfaces, in the area of which defects of the product are expected to be. The authors propose the use of an external induction heating technology by introducing an inductor into an open mold just before the injection process. The process of selective heating is performed through selection of an area as a withdrawable forming insert, approaching the surface of the coil. The paper is divided into two parts: simulation and experimental studies. The first part consists of processing parameters selection, theoretical model development and induction heating simulation process. Simulation technology was developed by integration of both electromagnetic and thermal analysis modules of ANSYS. The second phase of the presented research endeavor was aimed at experimental confirmation of the effectiveness of the proposed heating method. For this purpose, a test bench consisting of injection mold cavity, inductor, induction machine Minac 6, Pt100 sensor as a reference, cooling system and the Flir T620 thermal imaging camera was constructed. Measurements of heating efficacy were carried out for four different shapes of the inductor. The delineated temperature increase functions showed that external induction coil equipped with concentrator of magnetic field may be applied as an effective heating source.
