Structural behaviour of newly designed rail vehicle including failure analysis: Finite element and strain gauges

Abstract eng:
This paper outlines the results obtained for compression, draft, twist and impact tests. Rosette strain gauges were used to measure strain in three directions at designated positions. The strain gauge positions were primarily determined based on Finite Element Analysis (FEA) results. For compression, draft and twist tests, the maximum, minimum and von misses stress and the corresponding stress angle were calculated for each rosette strain gauge position. The 1.55 MN and 0.955 MN forces were applied for compression and tensile tests respectively. Stresses based on experiment were found to compare well with the FEA results. It was found that von misses stress under all conditions did not exceed 80% of material yield strength. In this study, it is concluded that the structure has the ability to withstand all twist conditions.
