An optimised and safe design of foundation systems for high-rise structures in difficult soil and groundwater conditions is based on a reduction of construction material used, construction time spent, energy consumed and the adequate consideration of the soil-structure interaction. For high-rise structures like high-rise buildings and bridge piers the Combined Pile-Raft Foundations (CPRF), in-situ load tests and non-linear numerical simulations are the basis for an optimised design. For challenging projects the observational method has to be applied for verification and quality control of the design. Regarding the 4-eye-principle as basis of the quality and safety control management an independent peer review of the planning design and the construction is the guarantee for optimisation, safety and serviceability.
