Holding capacity analysis of suction anchors based on the coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian method

Abstract eng:
Details of a three-dimensional finite element study on the basis of the Coupled EulerianLagrangian method for a holding capacity of suction anchors subject to inclined loads are presented in this paper. A classical finite element method has been widely used to predict a corresponding holding capacity of suction anchors installed into seabed for floaters mooring. But the classical finite element method would happen to make contact problems of interface between soil and suction anchor from pullout loading simulation in the numerical analyses. Whereas a finite element analysis based on the Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian method is capable of handling contact problems including large deformation of interface between soil and suction anchor. A series of three dimensional finite element analyses based on the Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian method for suction anchors with length to diameter ratios of 1.5, 3, and 5 were performed. The corresponding holding capacity of suction anchors subject to inclined loads is presented in the vertical and horizontal load interaction diagrams.
