Literature review on cyclic lateral loading effects of mono-bucket foundations

Abstract eng:
The renewable offshore energy sector is currently growing rapidly and there is a vast interest in optimization of the design procedures for the offshores wind turbines. Mono-Bucket can be a breakthrough in the sphere of offshore wind turbines foundations due to its lightness and fast installation and consequently cost-effectiveness compared to other common solutions. The long-term cyclic loading can cause degradation of soil-bucket system stiffness, which yields into accumulated and permanent deformations. Despite of the advantages, there is no standard procedure to design the foundation especially for assessing the accumulated deformations under environmental longterm loading. However, numerical and semi-empirical methods already used for offshore foundations can be adopted to take into account the effect of cyclic loading on Mono-Buckets. Among them, load-displacement techniques as cyclic p-y curves are of interest for its simplicity, however, they cannot normally consider the load frequency as well as soil real response due to pore-pressure development. On the other hand, numerical analyses including sophisticated constitutive soil models which account for the more realistic response are available. The numerical analysis are able to simulate the soil behavior to the cyclic loading with more details, although they are typically time consuming and sometimes not applicable for the design purposes. Therefore using a fast and quite accurate method with eliminating the complexity of detailed numerical calculation is highly demanded at the different design phases. The intention of the current study is to present, review and summarize the existing techniques to assess the effect of cyclic loading on Mono-Bucket foundations while emphasizing the advantage and disadvantage of each of them. Additionally, the need for the future research which is aligned with a rather fast and accurate design procedure is elaborated through this study.
