So today, management instruments such as acquisition of thirdparty funds, quality assurance methods and profiling are part of the daily life at universities. University councils dominated by non-university members are getting more and more influence on universities’ development. Decreasing state finance of universities must be replaced with funds received by industries and other research partners. The paper is dealing with the question if these management methods, usually applied in companies and enterprises, are useful and suitable for managing universities. That issue particularly is discussed under the perspective of the influence on structural engineering education. The conclusion is: New public management instruments may influence the working atmosphere at universities in a positive as well as in a negative way. It should be avoided to adopt them for university management without any modification.
