000013315 520__ $$2eng$$aSeismic analysis of flexible earth-retaining structures, such as diaphragm walls, is a challenging soilstructure interaction problem whose rigorous solution calls for refined numerical tools. These latter are still beyond the reach of professional practice, where very simplified models are in use, mostly based on the extension of limit-analysis to the seismic case, or on visco-elastic solution. This paper presents a solution of intermediate level developed for professional practice which, while avoiding the computational burden of advanced finite element models, still contains the essential components governing the nonlinear dynamic response of these systems. The problem under examination is characterised by the lack of symmetry introduced by the excavation. Qualitatively, the cut subdivides the soil stratum in two portions (regions A-B and D-E, inset of Figure) resting on a common base (region F) and interacting through the anchored/unanchored diaphragm wall (element C). Within each of these portions of soil two subregions can be further identified, one which is sensitive to the disturbance due to the interaction with the wall (regions B and D), and one which is not (regions A and E). The figure shows the simplified one-dimensional model which attempts to simulate the response of the soil-wall system as described above. C A
