The church of Agios Ioannis in the village of Askas in Cyprus, which contains a vast cycle of important and rare Byzantine wall paintings dating from the 15th and 16th, is used as a case-study. The dynamic characteristics of the church were established using in-situ ambient vibration measurements and then a finite element model was developed which was updated to much the measured periods of vibration. The model was then used to study the effectiveness of linear viscous dampers in the protection of monuments. Linear time-history analysis was used and two different configurations of the dampers were examined. In both cases considerable reductions in the base shear, of the order of 60%, were obtained.
