000013397 520__ $$2eng$$aThe present study aims to examine the optimal lateral stiffness design of composite steel and steel structural buildings subjected to interstorey drift constraints as well as member sizing limits. The traditional “trial-and-error” design approach is generally inevitable in order to distribute the materials efficiently while satisfying the lateral stiffness criteria. It is necessary to repeat the analysis-design loop until all the design performance criteria are met and the economical requirements are satisfied. It’s obvious that the optimal design solution is not always provided through this approach. Structural optimization, on the other hand, provides a numerical tool that can replace the traditional “trial anderror” design approach with a systematic and automated design process. In this paper an automatic, resizing approach for the minimum cost design of composite steel and steel buildings subject to top and interstorey drifts is presented and on the same time the two different types of buildings are being compared in order to find the less expensive solution as far as concerned the life cycle cost of the structure.
