The mitral valve is modelled by a thin latex rubber membrane and its vibrations are modelled by the F¨oppl-von Karman equations for the motion of thin plates. Scaling analyses are used to determine the deflection of the membrane under a given pressure difference, the frequency of vibration and the critical pressure difference for the onset of oscillation.
