With this aim in view, the objective is to describe the intermediate stage between more or less diffuse damage and the initiation of a macroscopic crack. This transient stage of damage induced deformation localisation in a narrow band necessitates a specific numerical treatment. An adapted extended finite element framework and its embedding into the existing formulation is presented and tested in fundamental numerical tests.
