000014374 520__ $$2eng$$aThis paper presents experimental results regarding the equivalent viscous damping induced by a cylinder moving transversely through sand with varying degree of water content. The experimental set up consists of a flexible steel frame with an attached cylinder which moves in free vibration inside a container with sand. Various conditions are examined which include cylinder embedded length, water-to-sand ratio and initial displacements. It is shown that the proposed set-up significantly increases the effective damping of the frame.
