A trove of new data from numerical simulations and state-of-the-art measurement techniques are being fruitfully combined with computationally-enabled access to the eigenspace of large, non-normal, linear systems, in order to provide tools whereby turbulent structure and mechanism can be reliably educed, and through which quantitatively accurate models are now emerging. Beyond jet noise, these models have a role to play in controlling turbulence in a variety of free and wall-bounded shear flows.
