000014572 520__ $$2eng$$aA new formalism is introduced that allows to identify the wavemaker regions of linear instability eigenmodes of nonparallel open shear flows. The formalism is based on a decomposition of the governing linear operator into locally acting components that extract the localized dynamics. The unique contribution of the local dynamics to the global dynamics of an eigenmode is identified and computed by an orthogonal projection with the adjoint eigenmode. It is demonstrated, for the example of a spring-mounted cylinder in uniform flow, how this analysis can be used to motivate a physical discussion on the frequency selection of fluid/solid eigenmodes.
