A particular focus is on the effects of the time horizon used in the optimal control on the resultant control input and the control performance. Compared with the well-known opposition control[2], higher drag reduction is commonly achieved with the optimal control. Through the detailed comparison between the control inputs obtained by the opposition and optimal controls, the drag reduction mechanisms in the optimal control are discussed.
