000014949 520__ $$2eng$$aWe report that the transition to turbulence in Couette flow corresponds to a second order phase transition and falls into the directed percolation universality class. The increase of the turbulent fiaction above the critical point as well as correlation lengths and times at the transition point are described by three critical exponents, which are in excellent agreement with the exponents of the directed percolation (DP) universality class.
