000015173 520__ $$2eng$$aThe conventional theory of hyperelasticity is easily generalized to include a swelling effect. The resulting theory can be viewed as giving a finite strain version of the well known eigenstrain problem in linear elasticity. We use this theory to study an abrupt inflation instability in pressurized shells. At fixed pressure, a slowly changing amount of swelling can suddenly cause a finite jump in the shell radius.
