000016048 520__ $$2eng$$aMajor earthquakes have taken thousands of human lives and have caused enormous damage to the economy and society. IAEE has been contributing to mitigation of earthquake disaster in the world since its establishment.  The 16WCEE Conference, to be held in Santiago de Chile, will be another excellent opportunity to share experience and knowledge and to work together in earthquake disaster mitigation.  Chile is one of the most seismic active areas in the world. Many of the largest earthquakes have occurred in this country, like the 1960 Valdivia Earthquake, and more recently, the Maule 2010 and Iquique 2014, with moment magnitudes larger than 8.0, with very few casualties due to collapse of modern structures. Resilience is the new paradigm emerging in earthquake engineering. Also, Chile is among the most attractive places in the world to be visited.
