Mega Bridges

Abstract eng:
Since 1990s, the construction of long span bridges, such as cable-stayed bridges, suspension bridges and arch bridges has been developing rapidly in China. Meanwhile, their seismic performances have attracted great attention in the fields of both bridge engineering and earthquake engineering. In this paper, the recent progress of these bridges in China is firstly summarized. Then, the seismic design methods and seismic energy dissipation devices for these bridges are introduced along with selected design cases. In addition, results of shake-table studies of a suspension supported bridge model and a cable-stayed model with passive energy dissipation devices are given. Finally, the Challenges especially on performance- based seismic design theory of long span bridges and test technology for long span bridge models are also presented. Keywords: Long span bridge; Seismic design; passive energy dissipation devices; shake table tests
