Failure of embankment structures resulting from crest settlements (e.g., induced by liquefaction or immediate seismic deformations) combined with cyclic and post-cyclic volumetric changes of soft, underlying foundation strata (e.g. short and long term reconsolidation) can trigger disastrous consequences such as flooding of protected lands, and disruption to water delivery infrastructure.
