The damage to the piles could be observed during seismic isolation retrofit work on the building 18 years after the earthquake. Almost all the piles were damaged. Initially, pile damage was classified into four categories based on the degree of cracks in the concrete and damage to the reinforcing bar. Each category of damage was explained in detail. Subsequently, the damage was summarized and the factors behind the damage to the piles were considered.
