000018643 520__ $$2eng$$aThe use of viscous dampers for the seismic response control on buildings is an effective solution and well known in the engineering community. One major problem on the design of solutions with viscous dampers is the definition of the dampers´ location, especially on tall buildings. The discussion is between the use of dampers in all over the height of the building or if it is possible to choose optimal locations and concentrate the dampers only on those places. On this paper a new methodology for the optimal placement of dampers is presented. The methodology is based on the evaluation of the Power Spectral Density (PSD) of the interstorey velocity on the locations in analysis. To improve the effectiveness of the solution, the dampers must be located in the places where the capacity to dissipate energy is higher. The dampers must be located between storeys because they work as a result of the interstorey movement of the storeys to which they are connected. In the case of viscous dampers, what is important is the relative velocity of the interstorey movement. In the proposed methodology, the choice of the optimal location is based on the expected value of the square of the interstorey velocity, as a measure of the energy dissipated. To obtain these values, the evaluation of the PSD of the interstorey velocity is needed. According to this method the optimal location of the dampers not only depends of the structure but also depends of the earthquake's characteristics. On the paper some application examples are also presented.
